Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod
In 1913, the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod sent missionaries to China to preach the Gospel, carrying out evangelical work in ports along the Yangtze River across Hubei and Sichuan, and forming the Evangelical Lutheran Church of China.
In 1949, American missionaries began returning home. While passing through Hong Kong to await ships and flights, God opened their eyes to the plight of countless refugees living in poverty and spiritual distress. Responding to God's calling, they resolutely decided to stay in Hong Kong to initiate evangelical and relief work, establishing what would later become the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod Hong Kong Mission.
Initially, the missionaries erected temporary bamboo structures in Tiu Keng Leng to hold worship services and minister to local refugees. They subsequently founded a Bible institute to train church workers. The following year, they rented premises at 232 Tai Po Road, Kowloon, to establish their first congregation, holding worship services in both Mandarin and Cantonese. Thereafter, through street evangelism, hospital visitations, and Sunday schools, the Synod actively proclaimed the Gospel. As the congregation grew, churches and mission stations were established across various districts in Hong Kong.
In 1953, the Synod established its first secondary school. From the 1960s onwards, the Synod founded numerous secondary schools, primary schools, and kindergartens, providing students with Christian holistic education. Furthermore, these schools served as evangelical hubs, with local congregations and mission stations using school premises to actively advance student ministry.

Having served refugees since the 1950s, the Synod has remained steadfast in developing social welfare services. In 1977, Lutheran Social Service, Hong Kong was established. In the same year, the Synod transitioned from a mission district into an independent local church, registering as the "Lutheran Church–Hong Kong Synod" and becoming a partner church of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod in the United States.
Since then, the Synod has continued to expand its ministry in evangelism, education, and social services—establishing new congregations, mission stations, schools, and social service units. Today, the Synod has over 9,000 members, 33 congregations, 8 mission stations, and more than 50 secondary schools, primary schools, and kindergartens, employing over 1,000 staff members and serving more than 20,000 students. Additionally, it operates over 40 social service units and 9 supporting organisations.
Under God's grace and protection, may the Lutheran Church–Hong Kong Synod continue to flourish, spreading the Gospel, nurturing believers, educating the community, and serving society.
